How online surveys work when people can answer in their own words
Most survey tools stop when the answers arrive. Asked keeps going. You write down what you want to learn, send one link, and people reply by typing, speaking or recording a short video. By the time you open the survey again, every answer is transcribed, tagged by theme and summarized on one page. Here is the full flow, step by step.
Step one, start with a goal instead of a blank form
Every survey in Asked begins with one sentence about what you want to find out. Why do trial users stop before paying? What do new hires find confusing in week one? Which part of checkout makes shoppers hesitate?
Type that sentence, pick who will answer (customers, trial users, employees, candidates or event attendees) and choose which answer formats you allow. If you add your website address, Asked reads the page title and description for context so the wording fits your product.
The goal stays attached to the survey. It guides the draft, the AI follow-up question and the summary you read at the end.
Step two, review a draft of five to seven questions
Asked turns the goal into a draft with five to seven questions in a sensible order: a warm opener, the questions that matter, and a closing question that invites anything the respondent wants to add.
You can change everything. Rewrite a question, change its type, drag it up or down, or delete it. The survey maker supports six question types:
- Open answer, where the respondent chooses text, voice or video
- Rating scale for quick satisfaction checks
- NPS from 0 to 10 with an open why question after it
- Multiple choice for segmenting answers
- Yes or no for simple branches
- File upload for screenshots, receipts or documents
Each open question can allow all three formats or only the ones you want. Some teams keep sensitive questions to text only and invite video on the questions where tone matters.
Step four, answers arrive in the browser, no app needed
Respondents see one question per screen, which keeps the experience calm on a phone. For an open question they tap Text, Voice or Video. Voice notes and videos record right in the browser on a phone or laptop. Nobody installs anything or creates an account.
Before they submit, respondents can listen to or watch their answer and record again. If you ask for permission to publish selected answers, a consent checkbox appears, and only answers with that box ticked can ever go public.
If you turn on the AI follow-up, Asked can ask one extra question based on what the person just said. It is off by default and limited per plan, so you stay in control of the conversation.
Step five, the analysis is ready when you open the survey
You do not watch hours of video. As answers come in, Asked transcribes voice and video, groups answers into themes, marks the sentiment of each one and pulls key quotes with timestamps. A one-page summary per survey tells you what people said most and where they disagree.
The survey analysis software page covers each part in detail, from transcripts to export.
Step six, act on what you heard
The last step is the one that justifies the survey. Copy a quote into a product spec, send a clip to the team that owns the problem, or export everything to CSV and PDF for a board deck.
- Share the summary with stakeholders who never open survey tools
- Publish consented answers on an answer wall with its own page per answer
- Send new answers to your systems with webhooks on Business and Enterprise
- Run the same survey again next quarter and read the new themes next to the old summary
Plans differ by monthly responses, transcription minutes and seats. See survey software pricing for the full limits.
Questions about the survey flow
Writing the goal and reviewing the draft usually takes a few minutes. Publishing gives you the link right away, so the first answers can arrive the same hour.
No. They open the link in any modern browser on a phone or laptop and answer. Voice and video record in the browser after they allow microphone or camera access.
Yes. Each open question lets you choose which formats are allowed, so you can keep a whole survey to typed answers and still get themes and sentiment.
Each plan sets a maximum video length per answer, from 2 minutes on Starter to 5 minutes on Business and Enterprise. Transcripts and quotes make long answers quick to read.
Try the first step right now
Type what you want to find out on the homepage and see the draft questions appear. The demo is a one-time preview, and your account keeps the draft when you sign up.
